What does a driving licence cost – and how is it calculated?
The total cost of a driving licence is made up of several components. Understanding each item helps you save money – and makes you better prepared when choosing a driving school.
The cost factors that matter
- Registration fee: A one-off enrolment fee charged by the driving school covering administration and learning materials (e.g. practice papers, app access) – typically €200 to €400.
- Driving lessons: The biggest cost item. The national average is around 40 hours for category B; the actual number depends on your personal progress and the driving school.
- Mandatory special drives: Motorway, rural road and night drives are required by law and billed separately – approximately €40 to €80 per session.
- Exam fees: TÜV or DEKRA charge a fee for the theory test (approx. €22) and the practical exam (approx. €121) – these fees apply again for any resits.
Typical price ranges by region
Total costs vary considerably by region. In rural areas and many eastern German states, prices often range between €1,500 and €2,200. In major cities such as Munich, Hamburg or Frankfurt, €2,500 to €3,500 is common – driven by higher hourly rates and, on average, more lessons needed.
The calculator above gives you an initial estimate. Since driving schools set their own prices, a direct comparison is well worth it: choosing the right school in your city alone can save you several hundred euros.
